Sometimes it may be like really difficult. “Babies cry out loud because their ears hurt, people asking too many drinks, just because it is free, children kick the back of seats and run up and down the aisles. Some passengers scream at you if you tell them what they are not allowed to do. You baby sit for a while. Working in the skies has changed. In the early days of aviation, the job of an air steward/ess was prestigious and pay was good and still is.
Young women saw the world, flew to exotic places where they could spend a few days at expensive hotels. One can just dream! They showed the passengers to their seats and helped them with their baggage. Everything was calmer and there was time for rest or a cup of coffee in the kitchen. Today the job is more stressful or let us says demanding. Flight attendants have three or four flights a day, with only little more than half an hour for the turnaround. It is much more than beauty and glamour. As a flight attendant rightly puts it, “I am much more than a pretty face, and don’t you forget it. I might save your life one day.”
Mrs. Gauri Kala Thapa, one of the most seniors in flight supervisor in Nepalese aviation, puts up her thought. It’s a dream for most girls to have a career that gives them an opportunity to fly around the world with a chance to look their best, always. Ever since my school days, I had always dreamt of joining the Hospitality field with a strong will of being an Ambassador of women empowerment and Nepalese hospitality. Among the various options in my mind, being an air-hostess gave me an impression of achieving certain chance to overcome obstacles in my personal life as well. Throughout the idea of serving people from different walks of life, I had the opportunity to enhance my inter-personal communication skill, self-appraisal, leadership and the most important of all; team-building. Working in a group in the aircraft cabin enabled me to understand the importance of team-building and the resultant synergy of combined effort. Being an Air hostess, not only does require a pleasing personality, but also a demeanor that naturally displays qualities like perseverance, patience, and compassion. As soon as I accomplished my Intermediate Degree, I rushed to achieve my childhood dream of being an Air-hostess. Fortunately, I was selected in the then Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation and was immediately bestowed the opportunity to fly high and abroad, proudly carrying my Cabin-wings. In no time, did I come to know my 25 years of the mile-high career passed away in a glimpse after attaining the post of In Flight Supervisor (IFS) for duration of about 10 years. Every minute in my career had always been different and no two flights were the same. People usually assume that Cabin-crews are only part of the service-team and are there for the comfort of the traveling passengers. However, it should not be forgotten that the Safety of the passengers is the primary objective of the Cabin-crews. There is a lot of competition, and with a job as rewarding as this, there is bound to be the selection of the finest to get through the spot. All that’s required is the passion and the heart to serve others by always being the best, and no one can stop you from taking off and flying high. The job of a cabin-crew definitely involves a lot of perseverance and unusually high dedication. Cabin-crews work to keep the travelling passengers safe and comfortable regardless of whether it is winter midnight or the summer midday.
It might be worth suggesting for the aspiring cabin-crews that it is indeed a challenging job with the requirement to stay fit and committed to staying in good health and shape. Cabin-crews should also be ready to work from dawn till the dusk, regardless of varying time zones and challenging flight schedules. But, the career, if chosen will definitely also help to enhance your knowledge as a traveler and improve your inter-personal skills. You will definitely learn to achieve independence and develop inter-personal skills. So, I definitely recommend everyone interested in this job to go out there, earn your wings and start your flying career. Let your dream take the flight!
