Restaurant is one of the common businesses established as well one of the most earned business. There are thousands of restaurants running in a city and we see 10 on every nook and corner. And almost on every restaurant the menu would be same Nepali food, Newari food, Indian, Italian, Chinese, etc. But has someone thought of running a restaurant undersea providing only sea foods. After so many hurdles and challenges, underwater restaurant name ‘Under’ was established the in Lindesnes on the coast of Southern Norway. It is the world’s largest undersea restaurant established in March 2019, keeping the goal to attract tourists from all around the world.
Under restaurant is the most beautiful and uniquely designed restaurant which is semi-submerged under the sea and is 495-square-metre restaurant where it’s fronted by a huge panoramic window that gives visitors a view of marine life. In fact, the ‘Under’ restaurant has a seating capacity of 100 guests and on normal nights it would serve 40 guests. Moreover, a building itself is an architectural gem designed by an award-winning architect fir, Snohetta. The building is half-sunken into the sea where the long 34 meter monolithic form breaks the surface of the water to rest directly on the seabed five meters below. The restaurant has three levels including a foyer and cloakroom, champagne bar, and main restaurant on the lower floor. They are joined by a giant oak staircase. The focal point of the restaurant is its panoramic acrylic window, which can be seen from each level within the building. It measures 11 by three meters, spanning the length of the restaurant wall. Like a sunken periscope, the restaurant’s massive window offers a view of the seabed as it changes throughout the seasons and varying weather conditions.
The restaurant is not only famous for its sea food but as soon as you enter into the restaurant it feels like journey undersea has started. The ambience and set up is also so well managed that you get a bar and area to relax with the ocean view glass wall kept giving you the insight of the busting life in the sea. The water marine animals such as seals, jellyfish, starfish, any many more can be observed live.
Talking about the food menu, restaurant is not only about the fishes that swim outside the restaurant but the fish and sea food are served on your plate as an special ingredient. Naturally, there will be an excellent selection of seafood at ‘Under’. But you also have the option of tasting seabirds and wild sheep that have grazed in the archipelago nearby. Famously known and uniquely contributed, the ‘Under’ Restaurant has been one of the plan to visit while you go to Norway.
The restaurant has itself been the famous but so to bring more entertainment to guest rather than food and ambience only, the researchers has been working to train the fish as well as the small animals eaten by the fish. Artificial lighting is used to attract plankton, which in turn lures other species and fish to the area. And then there will be an ongoing feast to the delight of the viewing audience. “One of our main criteria is that our guests will get to experience something unique in the sea,” emphasises Gautem Ubostad.
Thus, when the weather is bad, it’s very rough to go and stay near sea. But, it’s a great experience, and to sit here and be safe, allowing the nature so close into you is a very romantic and nice experience.”
