From a child to being a grownup we always think if we can fly like a bird in a sky. And on that note a man can fly only if he/she works on an aircraft. Watching a dream to be a pilot or an air hostess is a very pleasant dream but reaching there and doing the duty is equally difficult but excitement too.
Once you complete your training for a pilot you would be hired as a new pilot where many would start as ‘on reserve’ pilot or lowest level of seniority. This means you would be called at any time typically for 20 days each month and sometimes more than that when any pilot is unable to report the duty or new flight should be taken off immediately. The duty time of pilot are never consistent because sometimes they would fly only 50 hours a week and sometimes 110 hours. This is because not only flying on air, Pilots are responsible for many time-consuming duties before and after a flight, including weather assessments, filing flight plans, performing pre-flight checks on aircraft and filing post-flight reports, to ensure each flight is operated to the highest level of safety. A duty day which includes pre- and post-flight activities, in addition to actual flying time can extend past 14 hours, especially in the case of weather disruptions.
A life of pilot is more upon wondering on plane and travel to overseas countries most of the time. They have a very less time spent with family members or let’s say at home. It is because becoming a pilot involves arduous training, dedication and years of building experience. And while other profession brings holidays on weekends or vacations, aviation is such as profession which comes in higher demand during those holidays and vacation which means some pilots must have to do over shift too during these times. For them Dashain, Tihar or any festivals are not much counted to be a family time but instead a profession time. This is why they are considered the determined people but at the same time they are also called as one who doesn’t stay at home by a society. They are only outsiders.
Sufficient sleep is required for a body so to keep oneself boosted and energized to take next flight. That is why after reaching the destination pilots go for a sleep as soon as they reach the crew hotel. They travel but on those time when they reach to long waiting destinations. In gist, we can also say that pilot rest is critical.
However we can see some pilots who have been an entrepreneur as well such as Dharmendra Singh Thakuri, first officer at Saurya Airlines. He has been taking a flight as a pilot in flying international aircraft since 2016 as well as he is an entrepreneur who is an authorized dealer of Force Motors. He has been juggling and successfully balancing his work life. However, even he has not been able to manage time for a family. So, here again comes the life of pilot.
Thus, dedication and passion leads person to be a successful pilot. While their life is full of travel and flying like a bird, their life is also the hectic one with lot of sudden circumstances and holding a weight of many people’s lives.
